Who’d have believed it?
Who’d have ever thought we’d be where we are today? (Well, except the infectious disease experts who have been sounding the alarm for decades...)
But, among us common folks, who would have thought it could happen? Within a matter of weeks this spring, our world turned upside down.
We didn’t realize that the things we took for granted were so fragile. Going to a concert, hugging a friend, eating in restaurants, gathering with friends and sitting so close, touching our head together as we laughed over a meme on our phones… Who would have thought that these were things to be cherished? We thought they were just our old regular life.
We were close to people in our personal and business lives, and didn’t question it. We didn’t notice how important physical closeness was.
Who would have thought our lives would stop? We are just emerging from a long quarantine. We’ve lost so much. Our lives have shattered. The world is burning. It’s overwhelming.
But there is opportunity here. When things are destroyed, new things can arise. New growth forests emerge from the ashes of fires. Shattering the old makes way to create something new. Devastation can set the path for true change.
When the old ways are broken, we have to build something new.
This is true for our society. And it is true for each of us individually.
It is true for us as people. And it is true for us as professionals.
From a business standpoint, what we have been through and are still going through can be viewed through a prism of hope. We have an opportunity to question things we have always done a certain way. Is there a better way? We can re-create ourselves, our work, our relationships, with a fresh eye.
It’s not too much of a stretch to say that this upheaval is a gift. How often do we have a chance to start over?
Change is always hard. It’s a little easier when you have no choice.
This is an opportunity to shake off old habits. This is an opportunity to do things better. We will never look at the world the same way again. With our new appreciation of what really matters to us, we can use this time to find a new path.
The phoenix rises from the ashes of the fire. As a person, as a family member, as a friend, as a community member, as a business professional, we can seize this opportunity.
All we have to do is try.
